Pachamama

To the pre-Incan people of Peru and Bolivia,Pachamama (pronounced pah'cha-ma-ma), or Mamapacha, is the Earth, worshipped in her many forms: the tilled fields, her mountains seen as breasts, the flowing rivers as her milk. To ensure good harvests, corn meal is sprinkled at planting and rituals celebrating her are performed. When people fail to honor her, this dragon Goddess sends earthquakes as a reminder.

A more literal translation would be "Mother Universe"(in Aymara and Quechua mama = mother / pacha = world, space-time or the universe). Pachamama and Inti (her husband) are the most benevolent deities and are worshiped in parts of the Andean mountain ranges, stretching from present day Ecuador to Chile and Argentina. Llamas are sacrificed to her. After conquest by Catholic Spain her image was masked by the Virgin Mary, behind whom she is invoked and worshiped in the Indian ritual.

Since Pachamama is a "good mother", people usually toast to her honor before every meeting or festivity, in some regions by spilling a small amount of chicha on the floor, before drinking the rest. This toast is called "challa" and it’s made almost everyday.

ペルーやボリビアに住んでいたインカの人々にとって、パチャママ（或いはママパチャ）とは地球そのものを意味します。様々な形で愛され、崇拝されてきたこの女神は、畑、山々が彼女の胸に、また川の水は彼女の母乳とされてきました。種まきの時期には、豊作がもたらされるよう彼女を祭り、トウモロコシが供えられました。パチャママに敬意を示さない時には、彼女は地震や雷によってそれを催促したと言われています。

より直接的な訳語としては、「母なる宇宙」という訳もあります。アイマラ語やケチュア語では、mama＝母、そして pacha＝世界、時間や空間、宇宙です。パチャママとインティ（彼女の夫）は最も善意ある神々で、アンデス山脈の地方や現在ではエクアドルやチリ、アルゼンチンでは人気があります。ラマが生贄として捧げられました。スペインによる侵略後は、カトリックの概念が導入され、処女マリアの顔を持つようにもなりました。

パチャママは「良き母」であり、祭りごとの際には必ず登場します。乾杯をするときには、チッチャ（中南米で作られるトウモロコシから作った酒）を少し床に撒いた後で、自分たちがそれを飲むという習慣を続ける地域もあります。これは「チャラ」と言われる乾杯の方法で、毎日のようにその声が響きます。
